Why should pianos be tuned after a move?

A piano that has been moved and is waiting to be tuned
Even if you use the best professional moving service, such as the service we provide at Piano Tuning Fort Worth, your piano is likely to require a tune once it has settled into its new home. This will also be the case if a brand new piano is delivered to your home. Though it may have been pitch perfect in the store or factory, an initial re-tune will be required once it arrives in your home to get the piano sounding as you would desire.

One reason for this is that even small movements and adjustments to the frame of the piano will slightly alter the tension in the strings. This then affects the sound the piano makes. While moving the instrument we take every care to minimize any strain or movement, but it is inevitable that any movement from a stationery position results in a minor amount of movement.

A second reason that your piano will need a tune after moving is that the temperature and humidity levels will have differed between those in its original location, during the move, and in its new position. Any temperature or humidity changes cause the wooden frame to either swell or contract, again affecting the tension in the strings as they are attached to the wood. It is for this reason that we recommend siting your piano in an area of the house that maintains a relatively constant temperature and humidity level, so not by a window, heater or air conditioning unit.

As it is unlikely that the conditions will have maintained stability before, during, and after the move, after the initial tune on arrival in your new home we recommend tuning your piano again within a few months, after allowing time to let your piano settle into its new environment and adapt and adjust to the new conditions in that room.

Alongside tuning, we also offer general piano services to ensure that the piano is in top condition, such as total
pitch adjustments, voicing, and repair. It may be that as well as the strings, other internal parts of the instrument mechanism have shifted in the move and may need realigning or repairing to ensure that the piano plays well. If you aren’t sure what services your piano may need, phone us and we can advise you.

If you have not used a professional piano moving service and are concerned your piano may have suffered damage in the move, please do not hesitate to give us a call and we can visit and offer advice and make repairs where possible. If you have used another moving company and believe it may have still suffered damage, please contact us and we can help you in this situation too.

There is nothing worse than a piano sitting unused simply because it has become off-pitch or damaged, and our aim as a company is to return all pianos back to excellent playing condition so that as many people as possible can experience the joys of playing this wonderful instrument. We look forward to hearing from you today.
