How often should I tune my piano?

Manufacturers recommend tuning anywhere between 2 and 4 times in the piano’s first year after manufacture. This is because even though the piano leaves the manufacturer finely tuned to perfect pitch, the moving to its new home, along with the environmental and humidity changes the piano experiences in its first year, all mean the tuning will slip from perfect pitch. Adding to this need for tuning, the strings may stretch more in their first year as they settle from new, and so may cause the pitch to alter.

After the first year, it is generally recommended that you tune your piano twice a year, or more often depending on how often you play the piano, if it experiences extremely varying humidity levels, and how particular you are about perfect pitch.

Piano Tuning Fort Worth are able to keep your instrument in top condition and tune it back to the perfect pitch, as frequently as you desire. For more information, please see our page on our Piano Tuning service.

What if my piano is overdue a tune?

If your piano is long overdue for a tune, don’t worry. We understand that this happens for many reasons. Whether the piano has just been not played for a while, or has been moved long ago and in the busyness of the move it wasn’t re-tuned and so has slipped well off pitch, we can help! We can tune your piano to get it back to the correct pitch.

Often a piano that has not been tuned for a while will need a pitch adjustment. This requires a longer or multiple appointments, but during this time we will completely overhaul the pitch of the piano and return it to excellent playing condition. See our page on Pitch Adjustments for more information.

How to minimize the effects of the environment and humidity on your piano

Temperature and humidity changes both cause the wood of the piano to swell and contract. These changes strain the piano and take it out of pitch sooner. To try to minimize the effects of these, try to position the piano away from windows and doors that are often left open. Where possible, position away from fireplaces, heating and air conditioning. The ideal position for a piano is a room with stable humidity and temperature: preferably with a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity level of 42%.

Can Piano Tuning Fort Worth help with repairs, or sticking or silent keys?

Yes! We work with registered technicians who are able to perform regulation as well as standard tuning. These experienced operators can make repairs and perform a complete service on a piano to ensure that everything is aligned correctly and working in harmony with the other parts of the piano. We can also perform voicing to alter the sound of the piano if hardening of the hammers have caused it to change from the sound, or voice, you loved when it was first yours.

New to piano?
We want everyone to experience the joys of learning to play piano. Perhaps you inherited a piano from a family member. Or maybe you bought one secondhand because you saw it for sale and have always wanted to learn to play. We want to give you that opportunity! If you don't know the history of the piano you own it can be hard to know whether it needs tuning, maintenance, or even repair. If you aren't sure what it will take to get your piano into excellent playing condition, give us a call and we can advise or send out one of friendly technicians to examine it for you. We can perform repairs, voicing, regulation and tuning on many makes of instrument.

If your piano has been moved to your house it will almost certainly require a tune or two to settle it into its new home. During the moving process, even when great care is taken, the frame of the piano is moved and adjusted very slightly. Even a slight move in frame can affect the tautness of the strings, and thus the sound they make. It is a normal procedure to get a piano re-tuned once it has moved to it's new home. A second tuning may be required if the instrument had become very out of tune. We also recommend a further tune within a few months of moving once the difference in temperature and humidity of it's new surroundings have taken affect. Slight humidity and temperature changes cause the wood to swell or contract, and this too effects the tautness of the strings.

If you are not sure what care your piano requires, then please don't hesitate to give us a call so we can help!

Pianos in Fort Worth

Fort Worth is a great place to live, with a rich history, excellent museums, lots of live music, and of course friendly and hospitable people. We are also lucky to experience ‘proper’ seasons, with hot humid summers and cool potentially snowy winters. However, these variations in the temperatures and humidity levels throughout the year unfortunately put extra strain on our pianos, increasing the need for regular tuning. We keep our prices as affordable as possible so you can keep your piano in good playing condition, despite our changeable climate.
